In order to obtain a Standard Diploma, the Commonwealth of Virginia requires that all students entering the ninth grade in either the 2000-01, 2001-02, or 2002-03 school years must earn 22 standard units of credit (based on coursework), and 6 verified credits (earned by passing the course and its required Standards of Learning Test or an approved substitute test), as follows:

The two (2) verified credits in English are earned by passing the high school Standards of Learning (SOL) Test in English/Reading and English/Writing. Verified credits in English can also be earned by an acceptable score on approved substitute tests, including the ACT, SAT II English, Advanced Placement English tests, or the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
The four (4) other verified credits are earned by passing any four of the ten high school SOL tests in mathematics (Algebra I, Algebra II, or Geometry), science (Biology, Earth Science, or Chemistry), or history/social science (U.S. History, World History I, World History II, or World Geography). They may also be earned by an acceptable score on any of the approved substitute tests, inclusing, among others, ACT, AP, CLEP or SAT II.
In addition, Larry K. Dixon Senior High School requires that students earn six (6) standard units of credit in the following areas:
