A Learning Experience: Notes on Character Types and Game World

General Information

All characters in this game will be students in grades ten, eleven or twelve at an imaginary institution called Larry K. Dixon Junior-Senior High School. Thus, they should have Abilities that would be plausible for most high school students. I am also seeking characters that are willing to talk with people rather than hit, shoot, or stab them -- this means that characters with more than one dot in Abilities like Brawl, Firearms, Melee and so on will be rare. Any player wishing to have more than one dot in any of these Abilities should give me an explanation of them in the character's background.

Kiths

As of August 20, 2002, I am accepting boggan, eshu, nocker, pooka, satyr, sidhe or troll characters. Sidhe characters may be members of any of the five Houses in the main rule book (Dougal, Eiluned, Gwydion, Fiona, or Liam).

I do not accept Adhene, Hsien, Inanimae, Mer-folk, or Thallain characters. Gallain or Nunnehi characters are subject to ST approval.

Kith Update -- November 25, 2002

I am not accepting any more redcap, sluagh or House Fiona sidhe characters, as I have enough of those already (sorry! :-).

Courts

Characters may be of either the Seelie or Unseelie Court. Shadow Court characters will not be accepted, nor will violent or sadistic characters of any Court.

Backgrounds

Merits and Flaws

The following Merits and Flaws are disallowed:

On Weapons (real and chimerical)

In order to avoid incidents of school violence, Larry K. Dixon does not allow students to carry real weapons (concealed or otherwise) on campus (this is a no-brainer ;-). Thus, characters carrying guns or knives on campus are subject to suspension or expulsion (and removal from the game in the real world).

A note on chimerical weapons -- there /are/ Kithain teachers at Larry K. Dixon, so don't assume that you can carry around a chimerical weapon just because it has no mundane form, either.

Mood

I would like to keep the mood of this game somewhat brighter than that of the standard World of Darkness ®. In other words, I'd like to keep the angst to a minimum (one tragic incident in your character's background is believeable; three or more is just melodramatic :-). I would much rather see basically well-adjusted characters than basket cases.

One of the inspirations for this game was the first three seasons of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer television show; I think its juxtaposition of the supernatural and the high school experience, injected with a liberal dose of humor, comes very close to the mood I'm hoping to achieve.

In Closing

I'm sure I'll be adding to this as we go along; if you have any questions, just ask. I'm looking forward to running this game, and I hope you'll have as much fun playing in it.
